It’s been ten years since Hilary Duff’s last album, and many fans had all but accepted that she was done performing for good. Still, online blogospheres and X posts were abuzz with nostalgia for her classic hits like “Wake Up” and “So Yesterday.”
But Hilary heard the call. After spending the past decade embracing motherhood and a new chapter of life, she has finally returned to her roots with her latest single, aptly titled “Mature.” Co-written and produced by her husband, Matthew Koma, the song reflects on the blissful ignorance of her adolescence, during a time when fans primarily knew her from her pop hits or her starring role in the groundbreaking Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire. Here, Duff finally takes off the rose-colored glasses and lets fans into her newer world, full of the clarity and confidence that come with adulthood,
“She looks like she could be your daughter, like me before I got smarter, when I was flattered to hear you say ‘you’re so mature for your age,’” she sings of a former flame. In a tale as old as time, Hilary was a younger girl who fell for the “charm” of an older man; now that she’s older, more experienced, and more mature, she’s calling him out on the “vintage rug.” The song is a warning as much as it is a catchy tune: trust yourself and your intuition, and don’t blame yourself for being young and naive.
On November 21, Hilary once again sent the internet into frenzy, announcing her new album, luck … or something, would arrive on February 20. “So much love, late night anxiety and a little chaos went into making this album, “ she wrote on Instagram. “Hoping you see yourself in here the way I have 🪩 🍒 I love you and excited is the largest understatement.”
For early-2000s millennials and Gen Z’ers, Hilary will always be iconic, and this comeback is the moment fans have been waiting for, especially after the letdown of the canceled Lizzie McGuire reboot. As Hilary once declared in her 2003 single “Metamorphosis,” “Everyday is a transformation, Everyday is a new sensation, Alteration, Modification, An incarnation, Celebration,” and we’re all celebrating her “Mature” return.
