Can I be your hero?
Miley Cyrus asks this question over and over again in her new single, “Secrets,” featuring Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood, both of Fleetwood Mac fame.
The song expands upon Cyrus’ vulnerable songwriting skills, penning the heartfelt tune to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, following their estrangement after his divorce from Miley’s mother, Tish. “This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved,” wrote Miley in a post on X. “In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same. Thank you to Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood for bringing magic to the music. This song is for my dad.”
The song is truly magic; if the pep of pop music and the folksy flair of Fleetwood Mac had a baby, it would surely be this track. Cyrus’ lyrics are dripping with the love-tinged tears of regret, trying to bring back a relationship from a dark depth previously unexplored. Even through all of the glitz and glamour of superstardom, Cyrus has never forgotten what truly matters most: family.
The song clearly worked; the Achy Breaky Heart singer responded with a post of his own, posting “Best birthday gift a dad could ever ask for. Thank you @MileyCyrus for Secrets…a song straight from your heart to mine. The memories we’ve made together mean the world to me, and seeing you soar with your music makes me prouder every single day. Having Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood on this track is our magic. Here’s some memories through the years with Miley…hope y’all enjoy this as much as I do.” The X post was accompanied by a video montage of precious moments of the father-daughter duo together over the years. The track, which was part of the deluxe edition of Cyrus’ “Something Beautiful,” was followed up with another collaboration: “Lockdown” Featuring David Byrne.
It’s true what they say: love conquers all, and so does music.
