ZAYN is Headed in One Direction…Up with “Die For Me”

Picture this: it’s March of 2015. You’re walking in the halls of your high school when, in between Chemistry and Trigonometry, every girl in the hallway starts sobbing. In the distance, there’s a scream: Zayn Malik has left the global boy band sensation One Direction.

It was a blow the fangirls never thought they’d recover from. Zayn was the “bad boy” of the group, clad in all black and a smile to die for, but no one knew just what his exit would mean. What would they do if their favorite band was missing a crucial piece?

But, thankfully, Malik never left the music scene; his departure from the band led him to creating various solo projects over the past decade, including hits like “Pillowtalk” and “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” with Taylor Swift (who also happened to be his former band mate Harry Styles’ ex girlfriend…) and now, he’s back with a new hit to start off a new era.

His upcoming fifth studio album, “KONNAKOL,” has been a long time in the making. “KONNAKOL is ZAYN’s most culturally inspired project to date. The pop-forward album expands on the sound fans first heard on his record breaking debut studio album, ‘Mind of Mine.’ The snow leopard, a profound symbol in South Asia, on the album art showcases how deeply his heritage has inspired the record. Fans first saw the snow leopard imagery at the end of each Las Vegas concert, and now the album artwork brings the Easter egg full circle,” noted a recent press release from Malik’s team.

In his latest single, “DIE FOR ME,” Malik appears nearly as broken as One Direction fans on that fateful day in 2015. “Don’t leave me now, when I need you the most, said you would die for me, said you’d never let me go,” he sings, the essence of a broken man oozing out of every word. It’s a beautiful R&B tribute to the hurt of a love lost, when you just can’t quite wrap your head around how you got to this place – or how to get out of it.

It is Malik’s vulnerability and willingness to share that makes this track special; to witness an artist grow over a ten-year period, experiencing heartbreak and loss alongside that of your own, is a rarity few get to experience.

Now, Malik is headed on tour – and I’ll be there. Check the site here to see when he’s coming to your city, and be sure to check out “KONNAKOL” on April 17.
