In 2020, the future looked bright for John K. With platinum records and a growing global fanbase, his career was on the rise—until the pandemic brought everything to a halt. What could have been a setback instead became a season of growth, as John stepped into new roles as a husband and father, gaining a perspective that reshaped both his life and artistry
Five years later, he has returned with renewed passion and clarity, releasing his third studio album SALT + LIGHT in July, along with a tour to reconnect with the fans that stuck with him through it all. On August 22, John K returned to his fans in Boston on his ‘SALT + LIGHT TOUR: PART 1.’
New York artist and tour opener, Jacy set the tone at the intimate Sonia venue with her R&B-pop vocal stylings. This stop marked her final night on the road with John K, and the crowd was filled with family and friends showing their support, making the night feel less like a concert and more like a family reunion. With face jewels catching the stage lights and a silver cross chain hanging from her neck, Jacy performed favorites from her catalog, including “iDONTMIND” and “Butterflies,” a love song for her boyfriend, who looked on proudly from the audience.

John K was next up, and from the moment he stepped on stage, it was clear this wasn’t just a showcase of his music, but an invitation to share in good songs, easy banter, and genuine connection. The lighthearted tone set in immediately with his first song, “Ego Death,” where, in a bit of cosmic comedy, the stage lights failed to turn on. John laughed it off, setting the crowd at ease and leaning into the playful energy that carried through the night.
His set flowed from dance numbers to stripped-back acoustic moments, spanning his early hits through new tracks from SALT + LIGHT. Alongside his originals, John and his band surprised fans with covers of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and Justin Bieber’s “DAISIES.”
One of the evening’s most touching moments came when John noticed a 12-year-old girl in the front row, attending with her parents. Realizing she had been waiting nearly half her life for this night, he dedicated a song to her, acknowledging how his music had carried fans as much as it carried him.
Between songs, John opened up about parenthood and the journey that brought him back to the stage. “I’ve got two baby boys at home. It’s the most amazing thing in the world. If there are any parents in here, it makes you question literally everything about yourself,” he shared. “I didn’t know if I would ever be on a stage again. I didn’t know what was gonna happen. But I kept writing songs, and I kept falling in love with music.”
On his return to music, he added, “A couple things ran true. If I was ever gonna do this again, which we are, I want to be invited into every single room I walk into. I want to be a force for good. I want to inspire people, and I want to leave every room lighter and more encouraged than when they walked in.”
By the end of the night, fans spilled out of Sonia buzzing with energy, inspired and invigorated, not just by the music, but by the reassurance that John K is back.
