REVIEW: Giveon’s ‘Beloved’ Is Soul Music for the Broken and Healing

Giveon’s sophomore album Beloved is a masterclass in emotional R&B. It’s rich, intimate, and drenched in soul. It’s the kind of project that doesn’t try to chase trends but instead sinks into timelessness.

From the jump, the album feels like a love letter to old-school soul music, but with a modern pulse. Live instrumentation, soft horns, and lush strings form the backbone of most tracks, creating a warm, analog atmosphere that gives his baritone voice room to shine. He leans into his vocal depth and restraint rather than oversinging, which works beautifully with the vulnerable, reflective songwriting.

Thematically, Beloved is all about love in its most raw forms, including regret, longing, and cautious hope. Songs like “Twenties” and “Bleeding” hit hard because they don’t sugarcoat the emotional messiness of relationships. There’s a lot of reflection here, not just on heartbreak, but on personal growth, time lost, and emotional maturity. It feels like Giveon is peeling back layers of himself with each track.

Vocally, he’s never sounded more in control. His tone is as smooth as ever, but there’s more nuance in his delivery with subtle cracks, sighs, and pauses that make the emotions feel lived-in rather than performed.

The middle stretch of the album does dip slightly in energy. A couple tracks blend together sonically, but it rebounds strongly with a powerful, poetic closer that ties the emotional threads together.

The album flows well from start to finish. Themes of love, loss, and growth are explored with consistency and depth, giving it a strong sense of identity. There are no distracting features, forced pop hooks, or unnecessary hype. It’s just Giveon being himself, which makes the project feel genuine and focused. On the flip side, while there are strong songs, there’s arguably no massive, chart-dominating single that grabs immediate mainstream attention like “Heartbreak Anniversary” did in the past. Beloved isn’t flashy, and it’s not trying to be. It’s thoughtful, emotionally grounded, and musically rich. Giveon is clearly in his own lane, and this album cements him as one of the most honest voices in contemporary R&B. If you’re in the mood to feel something (and I mean really feel something), this is the album to put on.
