On June 4, flipturn took a brief detour from the festival circuit and brought their live show to Boston. MGM Music Hall at Fenway buzzed with anticipation as fans waited for Dillon Basse (vocals), Madeline Jarman (bass), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Mitch Fountain (guitar/synthesizer), and Devon VonBalson (drums) to emerge. When they finally appeared, the room erupted, kicking off a night filled with connection, community, and great music.
Opening with “Inner Wave,” flipturn wasted no time establishing the night’s energy. Basse leaned into the moment early on, pausing between songs to share just how much the night meant. Boston, he said, has always been one of their favorite cities to play, and performing at MGM Music Hall had long been a dream for the indie rock band. Looking out at fans packed wall-to-wall, the band’s disbelief felt understandable.
Their gratitude remained evident throughout the set as they made a conscious effort to connect with the audience. During “Chicago,” they had the entire room swaying with hands raised overhead, creating a wave that stretched from the barricade to the back wall. There was also something especially personal about this stop. Basse shared that, despite flipturn’s Florida roots, Massachusetts holds a special place for him. With family in attendance, including his sister, who was celebrating her boyfriend’s birthday, the show carried the warmth of a homecoming.
The first time I saw flipturn, I was struck by how their performance felt less like a concert and more like an intimate jam session that just happened to unfold in front of a sold-out crowd. Even as the band continues to graduate to bigger stages, that feeling remains central to their appeal. There’s an authenticity to the way they perform and interact with one another that makes every venue feel a little smaller.
As the final notes of “Nickel” rang out, flipturn proved once again that their greatest strength lies not just in their songs, but in the sense of community they foster wherever they play.
