Thousands of people filled Boston Common on Sunday for 741 Frequency Fest, a massive farewell party hosted by former Celtic Jaylen Brown (JB), his clothing brand 741, and the 7uice Foundation. Throughout the basketball star’s time in Boston he has invested in young people, education, and neighborhoods across the city. It was only fitting that his final celebration before beginning his next chapter in Philadelphia was centered entirely around giving back to the community who supported his journey on and off the court.
The public park was transformed into a vibrant community festival with fan experiences throughout the day, including food trucks, blow-up sports games and carnival activities for kids to play. Attendees also had the opportunity to practice their best shots on Hoopbus and shop Brown’s brand, 741, on its pop-up truck. Fans could also leave their own mark by writing personal messages for Brown on a dedicated tribute wall, and he even gave the crowd the rare opportunity to get up close and touch the NBA championship trophies.
With kids heading back to school in the next couple of weeks, Brown gave away free backpacks to all of the kids at the festival. To make sure everyone looked their best for the new school year, he also provided free haircuts by Marvelous Cuts and complimentary nail services by Naoir B Salon for kids 17 and under. The spirit of giving continued throughout the afternoon, with creator Zach Dereniowski, also known as MD Motivator, surprising attendees with cash and sneakers throughout the day.
The festival energy was kept high with an incredible musical lineup. Rising artists Yanna and Money MyFace kicked things off before a star-studded roster took the stage, featuring Massachusetts natives Joyner Lucas and Millyz, alongside Big Boss Vette, Belly Gang Kushington, and Veeze. My personal favorite moments of the day were watching Jaylen grab the mic to rap his own song with Ferg, and Smino’s performance; both sets were absolutely electric. Lil Jon also surprised the crowd with “Get Low” before Lil Baby closed the concert portion.
Following the performances, the city took an emotional moment to honor Brown’s indelible impact on Massachusetts. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu joined him for a special presentation, unveiling a “Jaylen Brown Way” street sign memento. At the same time, state representatives honored him with a Key to the City, a fitting tribute for a player whose local impact extended far beyond basketball.
As Brown prepares to start fresh in Philadelphia, 741 Frequency Fest showed everyone that the relationships, programs, and deep impact JB built throughout Boston will forever remain a part of his legacy. As a long-time fan of JB, I will always appreciate the heart and soul he has poured into this community, and wish him continued success in his next chapter.
