Singer-songwriter Nieve Ella is one of the pop industry’s newest additions. Hailing from the United Kingdom, Ella has unfailingly grabbed the attention of dedicated fans in the UK and US alike. Part of a small group of up-and-coming international pop stars including Alessi Rose, Ella has garnered a slew of accomplishments in the last two years. Ella opened for Inhaler in 2023 and is currently supporting Girl in Red on her UK/EU tour. Just recently, Ella played her latest release “Ganni Top (She Gets What She Needs)” at Wembley Stadium. The empowering anthem is one of eight songs included on Ella’s upcoming EP “Watch it Ache and Bleed,” out October 17th.
Ella describes “Ganni Top” as a reclamation of female sexuality. “This song was created wine drunk, late one night with my 2 good friends… and we knew immediately it was something special,” Ella said of the unapologetic, hysterical, and undeniably fun single. It’s been so interesting to watch the teasing of this song reach new people every day, get so many mixed opinions, and how many people get uncomfortable with women talking about their sex life and how we decide to wear our clothes. Ganni Top is a song that we made for you to feel sexy and confident every time you hear it, so please go enjoy it and get what you need xx.”
The opening lyrics, which Ella teased across socials for months, act as a powerful hook. Its first few words, “I got my Ganni top stuck in my washing machine,” are both pretentious yet frenzied, and set the tone for the rest of the song. “I’m tryna be the next model on your silver screen, and every time I hear your voice it makes me wanna scream, so I scream.” The brutally honest lyrics grant “Ganni Top” a spot on the coveted list of “female rage” songs among Olivia Rodrigo’s “all american b*tch,” Phoebe Bridgers’ “I Know the End,” and others.
The second verse is increasingly raunchy and playful: “You can fill me in the back of your limousine/ And then you’ll know why they call me G.O.A.T./ I can spell it out for you if you know what I mean/ What I mean…” The percussion and electric guitar explode along with Ella’s voice as she descends into the chorus, wherein she sings, “She, she, she, she, she, she gets what she needs.” As the third verse opens, the instrumentals subside. “I’ll break it down for you lovers in the back row seat/ It ain’t as easy as they tell you on the magazines/ Takе it step by step, and show him what you need/ And he’ll plеad, ‘Please, please, please, please.’” After another round of the angsty chorus, Ella descends into the bridge: “In my hot top, honey, you can shake the will/ Put your foot on the gas like you’re some big deal/ And we’ll ride it off from there/ Baby, let me change your gears.” “Ganni Top” is cocky, teasing, and filled with charm.
“Ganni Top” is the short and sweet teaser of what fans can expect from Ella’s upcoming EP. The single, a reward for months of waiting, is an ideal introduction to Ella’s musical style. Unapologetically loud, honest, and thrilling, Ella’s future releases are sure to garner even more success and accolades.
