Boston Spends “An Evening with St.Lucia”

Thursday night, St.Lucia kicked off the first show of their current North American tour at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club. Billed as “An Evening with St. Lucia,” the tour features no openers, offering an intimate, two-set performance designed for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

St. Lucia, led by husband-and-wife duo Jean-Philip Grobler and Patti Beranek, was welcomed to the stage with eager and open arms. Grobler noted that it had been too long since they had been to the city. Their last show in Boston was back in 2022 at the very same venue, making the evening feel especially nostalgic.

Dressed in matching red jumpsuits, the ’80s-inspired electro-pop quintet wasted no time diving into a series of live debuts from their most recent albums, “Fata Morgana: Dawn” and “Fata Morgana: Dusk.” Highlights from the first set included “Something’s in the Way,” “Pie in the Sky,” and “Summer Nights.” Afterward, the band stepped away for a brief intermission, as calming, ethereal music filled the room and left fans eagerly anticipating the second half of the night.

After about 5 to 10 minutes and an outfit change, Grobler, Beranek, and their bandmates returned to the stage in coordinated white jumpsuits. Set 2 was one for the day-one fans, as the crowd got to dance along to their older hits including “Closer Than This”, “We Got it Wrong” and “Dancing On Glass”.

Things got even more exciting during their performance of “September” off of their 2012 album “When The Night.” The band put on a light show with handheld spotlights, while Grobler ran through the crowd, circling the venue and turning the performance into a fully immersive moment.

Toward the end of the night, Beranek passed out roses to fans in the front row, a small but heartfelt gesture of appreciation. The evening of dancing and shimmering new-wave sounds came to a close with one of the band’s biggest hits, “Elevate,” sending the crowd out on a high.
