Myles Smith brought his My Mess, My Heart, My Life Tour to Boston’s Leader Bank Pavilion on August 24. Underneath a sky full of Boston stars, Smith connected with the audience in a way that made them feel seen, transforming the expansive outdoor venue into an intimate space. It’s a rare ability, and one reason fans continue to return, even after three years of touring.
Unsurprisingly, this was not Smith’s first time in Boston, and that was by design. He made a point of sharing his affection for the city, telling the crowd that Boston is one of his favorite places to perform because it’s been so welcoming and accepting. Boston crowds are known for being loud and engaged, and they proved that reputation true that night. Although “Dublin Lights” was not originally on the setlist, the crowd’s unrelenting chants for the song eventually won Smith over. Without prior rehearsal, Smith and his band performed the song, which made the audience leap to their feet.
But the spontaneous musical moments weren’t the only thing that made the evening memorable. At one point, Smith asked the audience to raise their phones with the torches off. He then prompted them with a series of questions, including, “Have you felt lonely?” and “Have you felt depressed?” With each resounding “yes,” phone lights flickered on across the venue, illuminating the crowd like the stars overhead. The moment created a striking visual representation of the shared experiences among those in attendance.
After pouring his heart out on the stage, the show ended on a heartwarming note. Smith invited young fans onto the stage to sing “Stargazing.” As the words “Intertwining souls, We were never strangers” echoed through the venue, they felt like more than lyrics. They became a fitting reflection of the My Mess, My Heart, My Life Tour and Smith’s rare ability to turn a concert into a space where strangers can feel connected and understood.
