On August 14, Chance Peña brought his When I Change My Mind I Don’t Mean It Tour to Boston’s Roadrunner for one of the biggest show of his tour to date. Originally scheduled for the Royale, the show moved to the larger Roadrunner as demand grew, reflecting how quickly Peña’s audience is expanding.
From the moment he took the stage, it was clear that the larger venue had done nothing to diminish the intimacy of Peña’s music. Roadrunner was filled with fans of all ages, united by an appreciation for Peña’s vulnerable lyrics and raw voice. He opened with “The Voyager,” setting the tone for a night built around storytelling and connection. Fan favorites such as “I Am Not Who I Was” were among the night’s highlights.
Peña’s live performance captured the same emotional quality as the recording. As a fan myself, one of the most remarkable parts of the evening was Peña’s voice. There was virtually no difference between what I have heard on his recordings and what I heard live. His vocals were just as clear and emotionally controlled. If anything, hearing him live made the strength of his voice even more apparent.
For an artist whose music thrives on vulnerability and intimacy, moving into a larger room could have easily changed the experience. Instead, Peña proved that his ability to connect with an audience only grows with the size of the room.
